I know usually at the beginning of this journal, I would say: "how's everyone doing? I hope everyone is doing well." But this I think is a serious topic that I think needs to be brought up especially to all the Deviantart artists.
So I've seen a couple of journals this past week about a particular website known as wallpart.com or the Poster Shop. I started hearing about this website recently and don't even recall going onto this website because I heard from people that once you're on that site, they steal information from the person visiting.
So one of my friends 2002dragon
recently had her art stolen by this site including her art of her fan character "Digit" (apologies if I spelled the name wrong). So out of curiosity I decided to go onto the website and see if any of my art was up there and believe or not, it was, as a matter of fact, as far as I know 24 of my art pieces are being sold on this website. (Now the search engine is actually pretty wonky, you type what you want to see, and you may see a couple of different sets of pictures and so on, so if you type your username, and do another search of your username later, you'll see different pictures).
Now I'm not sure if it's true or not but apparently you can't report the artwork as violations as once you do that, apparently the website will take more information about you from you.
Now here's my personal opinion about this:
I find this website wrong in so many levels and I'll explain:1. Using artwork without the artists' permission:
As many people would consider this, when this kind of situation happens, it is considered "art theft" (Art theft is when people steal other peoples' work without their consent/permission) as the people did not receive permission to borrow the art piece and weren't credited for their hard work which brings me two...2. Making money while the artists get nothing:
This is the HUGE part of the problem of this site, is when this company is making lots of money while the artists get nothing. Artists put so much time and effort into their art and like myself, we usually do things like this for fun. And to have someone stealing your are work that you put your heart and soul into and selling it while you're making nothing is pretty heart breaking and not only that, illegal
as they're making money without paying the artists.3. Can't report it:
I'm assuming people have reported the art pieces but were unsuccessful getting it removed and unfortunately, getting some info stolen, that's not right as once it's reported, it should be removed, not left on.
But as an artist here on Deviantart, this is expected especially to those who have no word marks, watermarks, etc. on their artwork. Once your artwork is up on the internet, there's a risk that your artwork can be stolen and unfortunately a lot of people fall victim to this. It's like "be careful of what you say or post on the internet" because sometimes there's consequences that could effect your life.
Am I angry about this? ... No, I would say I'm actually disappointed about of the situation, it would have been appreciated if someone from the site message me and ask if it was okay to use one of my pictures as a poster instead of stealing it (I would have actually said "no" to the question either way, asking or not). Now a few of the pictures did have my username on them (so I guess you can say I was given a bit of credit?) but it still wasn't right as I like I said before, they didn't ask and they're making money while the artists get nothing in return.
So after finding this site out, I checked Deviantart to see if anyone else had their art stolen too, I saw some journals that explains about the website and how they fell victim (which are the type of journals I would like to see as it's warning journals and they explain the situation) and then I saw some journals with people saying that "this website is going to go down" or "This website is done once I get through to them", these type of journals will NOT solve anything. Now if it was possible, I would recommend people to report the site however, since they could possibly get information from you if you report them on their site, best not to do that. However, I do have a couple recommendations.
• Make a warning journal such as this one, and explain what this site is doing and give as much information about the website as possible to the people you're warning to because awareness is very important especially to those who aren't aware of this situation.
• There is a petition going around online to remove Wallpart.com, this petition has over 83,000 signatures so far and they still need around 66,000 more signatures. If you want to sign this petition, by all means, go for it, the link is provided below:www.change.org/p/remove-wallpa…
I recommend people not to go on this site, if you're one of those people who wants to see if their art was stolen not going to stop you but as long as you don't report the pictures for violations as they could get information from you.I will still continue posting artwork up here so if you're concerned whether or not I'm going to post art, don't worry, I still will.
Anyways, I know I'm supposed to do an anime review for last week so I will get to it soon as well as the pictures, so stay tune, until then hope to talk to you all soon! Update:
An awesome friend of mine name kneestocking96
found an article that explains about wallpart.com or Poster Shop in full detail. The article confirmed that this company is a scam (as to why USA hasn't dealt with them yet, no idea). www.plagiarismtoday.com/2015/0…
Please read this article when you have the chance because this will help more people get an understanding about what this website does.
Thanks Kneestocking96 for letting everyone know about this article.
